We were fortunate enough to be in the Classic Dirt Bike Hall at the 19th Carole Nash Classic Motorcycle Mechanics show where CBD editor Tim Britton collared Trials legend Sammy Miller for an impromptu interview...

Sam who was a hugely successful Trials rider and road racer remembers being invited to Barcelona to trial the Bultaco Sherpa prototype. He marvelled at just how good it was.

At the end of 1964 Sammy signed for Bultaco. The rest, as they say, is history. Once Bultaco had signed off the prototype, the company produced 1000 bikes in that year - the equivalent of five or more years production from the British motorcycle industry.

After the success of the Sherpa, Montesa and Ossa "jumped on the bandwagon" says Sammy. And now, of course, the Spanish lead and dominate the market.

As an aside, when Sammy had finished, a desperate visitor was asking other visitors for a loan of a piece of paper and a pen, for the great Sammy's autograph. He got in in the end and, with shakey hands, popped it into his wallet...

GP Racer PaddockThis is part of the attraction at the Stafford Show, legends rub shoulders with visitors. Earlier Kiwi race suiperstar Grame Crosby had been signing autographs in the GP paddock.
