The way we were: November 1962

Triumph Tiger 90 350cc twin

Alongside the major British manufacturers of BSA, Triumph, Velocette, AMC, Royal Enfield et al, many ‘foreign’ makers were represented with the likes of Honda, Aermacchi, BMW-Isetta, Capriolo, Ducati, Heinkel, Zundapp and Moto Guzzi taking stalls directly, while Douglas mounted a large display of Italian designed Douglas-Vespa scooters.

The Greeves factory from Essex offered a handful of new models and had scrambles ace Dave Bickers on hand to help new customers, although at times he was to be found on the press stands too, alongside fellow celebrity guests Geoff Duke and John Burton.

Triumph named its new hot 350cc twin the Tiger 90 (above), its engine derived from the 349cc unit-construction Twenty-One. BSA focused much attention and promotion on the new ‘works developed’ frame for the C15 over the counter trials and scrambles motorcycles. Honda, which was becoming noted for its robust lightweights, went ‘micro’ with the new 49cc ohc C110 motorcycle complete with dual seat, flashing indicators and a full 5bhp@9500rpm on hand, enough to propel the tiddler along at over 40mph, two-up.
