Put the dampers on

There's one essential oft-overlooked piece of maintenance, which improves handling no end and gives back road confidence in bucketfuls. Do you know what it is yet?

Change your fork oil! Never easy (usually), although my old Triumph had two little drain plugs, which was very thoughful, but in many cases you'll have to up-end the fork legs to drain the old oil out (measure the quantity as a rough guide). Replace with fresh of the correct viscosity and, hey presto! Handling is reformed.

I remember doing the job on an old Suzuki X5 I owned and the old oil looked like Fairy LIquid mixed with cream. And, oh, did it smell rank! Nasty!
